Hacia 1915 Romero de Torres realizó este magnífico retrato de la bailarina y coreógrafa Encarnación López (“La Argentinita”). Nacionalizada en España fundó en Madrid con el poeta Federico García Lorca una compañía de baile andaluz.
En esta obra se aprecia cómo Julio Romero de Torres lleva figuras del arte popular de su tiempo. El retrato responde a una época en que el pintor utiliza una pincelada y colorido influenciado por el movimiento impresionista francés. La expresión de la “Argentinita” queda desplazada a un segundo término, para resaltar la importancia del color, que en definitiva, es el auténtico protagonista del cuadro.
The little Argentinian
Around 1915 Romero de Torres painted this magnificent portrait of the dancer and choreographer Encarnación López (La Argentinita, The Little Argentinian). She became a Spanish citizen and founded, along with the poet Federico García Lorca, an Andalusian dance company in Madrid.
In this work it is possible to appreciate how Julio Romero de Torres depicted the figures coming from the popular art of his time. The portrait matches to a period in which the painter uses a stroke and coloring influenced by the French impressionist movement. The expression of the Argentinita (Little Argentinian woman) stays in a second place to highlight the importance of the color, which is definitely the main figure of the painting.
