Mendigos (Beggars) was painted by Rafael Romero Barros, the father of Julio Romero de Torres, in 1868. This work brings together the three fundamental aspects of Romero de Barros: the landscape, the portrait and the still life.

The painting shows the wife of the painter, Rosario Torres Delgado, holding in her arms her son, Carlos. A poor girl leans on Rosario Torres on the right side. All three persons look lost and dejected. The rags they are waring betray their social class.

Romero de Barros, along with a group of artists, created a movement which rejected the traditional concept of landscape: the recovery of light. This work belongs to this movement.
