Work from 1928. Cristobal de Castro was born in the Villa de Iznajar (Cordoba). He married the artist Mary Carbone, also painted by Romero de Torres.

Romero de Torres painted only a few masculine portraits; among them, the paintings of his closest friends, like the “General Muñoz Cobos” or “Joaquín Alcaide Zafra”.

The writer appears in a serenity mood, face to a large open window and the Roman Bridge of Córdoba. It also shows the majestic river Guadalquivir and at the background the city in the evening’s twilight. His hands are leaning on a book. That is a symbol of his creative side: he was a poet, novelist, political writer and author of numerous works, among them: “Russia in Europe”. The great friendship that they had was the reason why Cristobal, an avid collector of the Romero de Torres paintings, dedicated a book to his memory: “Vidas fértiles, Julio Romero de Torres” (Fertile lives, Julio Romero de Torres).
