Happiness
Happiness

This work was painted in 1917, when the painter was at the high of his talent. Romero de Torres mastered to perfection the painting technique. This is revealed by the use of line and color.

This painting is master composition with a female figure in the center taking the leading role. In the background appears a guitarist; Romero de Torres used his son’s hands as a model. The female figure lying down in the classical Greek style crosses the composition, dividing it in two sections, one is vertical and the other horizontal.

The scene is distributed like a “tablao” flamenco. It looks like a courtesan party because of the close secrecy of the composition and the extravagant clothing of the figures.

In the background the river and the remoteness are illuminated by the last lights of dusk.

In this painting Romero de Torres does not limited himself to the treatment of the scene as a gypsy encounter. There is no chaos nor party on it; on the contrary. This work transmits a deep mystical feeling and the true meaning of this sad or happy rite. The young female figure on the front has a serene and serious face that transmits a deep feeling. This feeling is highlighted by the drawing she does with her hands and own body while dancing. The man with the guitar becomes smaller while the woman rises above him. Once again the great love that the painter felt for the flamenco encourages him to depict the copla and the flamenco in his paintings.
