Original poster from Córdoba 1913
Original poster from Córdoba 1913

The poster as a advertising strategy was born in France at the end of the 19th Century. The best poster designer was the French painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Thanks to this painter, the poster acquired artistic importance when the Modernism began to spread around the European Continent. The poster of the Moulin-Rouge inaugurated the modern advertising that takes the art from museums to the streets. In Spain, Barcelona was the the most receptive environment for this kind of art. The Catalan vanguard movements spread it through the famous Catalan seminar Les 4 gats.

Julio Romero de Torres got influenced by this movement, combining it with his homeland resemblances and creates magnificent posters for the festivals in Córdoba. In this example the artist used fundamentally green and blue tones, reminiscences of his first period.

The two female figures are similar to those appearing in the work La Córdoba Cristiana del Poema de Córdoba, or The Christian Córdoba of the Córdoba’s Poem. The woman on the left is wearing a shawl and the woman on the right a mantilla. Both articles of clothing symbolize again the duality between the profane and religious aspect. The dresses of the two woman are similar to those of other works by Julio Romero de Torres. In a background with a green landscape appears the river Guadalquivir, along with the tower of the cathedral and the city of Córdoba. The lanterns of the right side provide a bit of color and festive feeling in this advertising poster.
