Around 1915 Romero de Torres painted this magnificent portrait of the dancer and choreographer Encarnación López (La Argentinita, The Little Argentinian). She became a Spanish citizen and founded, along with the poet Federico García Lorca, an Andalusian dance company in Madrid.
In this work it is possible to appreciate how Julio Romero de Torres depicted the figures coming from the popular art of his time. The portrait matches to a period in which the painter uses a stroke and coloring influenced by the French impressionist movement. The expression of the Argentinita (Little Argentinian woman) stays in a second place to highlight the importance of the color, which is definitely the main figure of the painting.
