The woman who appears semi-nude in this portrait from 1919 is the Catalan artist Maria Palou, one of the most recognized flamenco dancers of her time. The painter loved this work and hence he retained it until his death.

Romero de Torres sold all the works exhibited in an exposition organized in Argentina in 1922, with the exception of this painting titled La muerte de Santa Inés (The Death of Saint Ines). Previously, this painting was called, La Niña de las Joyas, (The Girl with the Jewels). On the same subject Romero de Torres painted a second version ordered in America called La niña del espejo (The Girl with the Mirror). Nowadays this work belongs to the private collection of Horacio Bustos of Buenos Aires.

The painting shows a young girl holding in her hands a mirror that reflects a chest full of jewels, symbol of the unattainable desires of the woman. Romero de Torres wanted to transmit a moral sentiment, with this painting, avoiding the religious dimension.
